Upcoming Events

  • Intimacy

    Tuesday 27 January 6-8pm

The Walrus, Ship Street BN1 1AD

In our first event of the year, author and psychotherapist Emily Howse will be joining us as we explore intimacy in our writing - how we express physical, emotional, psychological and sexual closeness on the page - and maybe even with ourselves and our reader?

Emily will be sharing from her debut The Painters Daughters, which delves into a closely intertwined sister relationship, and give us a sneak peek from her soon-to-be-published second novel, Mrs Dickens.

  • Thrillers

    Tuesday 24 February, 6-8pm

The Walrus, Ship Street BN1 1AD

How do you write a compelling thriller that grabs your reader and keeps them on tenterhooks until the final page? Or maybe, your story needs some elements of suspense and intrigue that you can't quite identify or plot. Helping us discern what makes a reader shiver with anticipation/dread is SJ Watson, a master of the psychological thriller and author of three novels, including his smash hit debut Before I Go to Sleep, which has sold more than 6 million copies and been published in more than 40 languages.

    Tuesday 28 October 2025, 6-8pm

The Walrus, Ship Street BN1 1AD

In light of The Salt Path controversy, it seems there is much to discuss.

To unpick the continuing value of memoir and the choices a writer makes sharing their life on the page, Vybarr Cregan-Reid memoirist, speaker and broadcaster, and author of We Are What We Read: a life without and within books, and Footnotes: how running makes us human, will be travelling down from York where he teaches at York St John University.

  • Screenwriting: Shaping a Great Story

    Tuesday 30 September2025 , 6-8pm

    The Walrus, Ship Street

If you have ever wondered how to write propulsive, grab you and don’t-let-you-go story lines that take you high and low, the incredible Pete Lawson is going to explain how.

Pete has written more than 250 episodes of Eastenders, as well as Casualty, The Afternoon Play, London Bridge and Capital Lives, and created and wrote Being April for BBC1. He is also a long term supporter of RWC and chair of Brighton-based young writers' charity Little Green Pig.

At our events we spotlight a theme and inform by connecting, listening and sharing work across genres through workshops held on the last Tuesday of each month from 6 - 8 pm.

The meetings cover both practical and thought - provoking discussions that challenge participants to expand creative boundaries.

Events are open to writers of any ability who are intentional about their work. Attendees range from university students to published writers to retired professionals.

We actively collaborate with other arts organisations such as New Writing South, Brighton Festival and Brighton Dome, The IDA Project and York Literary Festival.

Congratulations to Cindy & Victoria of @realwriterscircle on a brilliantly entertaining Brighton Festival event last night, with authors Samuel Burr and Tanya Byrne. Cindy and Victoria are so supportive of Brighton authors, both published and yet to be published, and the monthly Real Writers Circle events are a great way for us to connect.

Thank you both for all your hard work and generosity.

Francis Quinn, author of The Smallest Man, That Bonesetter Woman and The Lost Passenger
